Biogenic CO₂: closing the carbon cycle
Through Biorig, our renewable gases division, we capture and recover the CO₂ generated during biomethane production, transforming it into a renewable source of carbon.
A renewable source of carbon
Biogenic CO₂ is carbon dioxide derived from organic matter and forms part of the natural carbon cycle. Although it is chemically identical to conventional CO₂, its origin is different: biogenic carbon has previously been absorbed from the atmosphere by biomass, whereas fossil carbon comes from resources that have been stored for millions of years.
It comes from biomass and recently formed organic matter. It is part of the natural carbon cycle, as the carbon has previously been absorbed from the atmosphere.
It comes from resources that have been stored for millions of years. Their use releases carbon that was previously outside the recent natural carbon cycle.
Applications of biogenic CO₂
Food and beverage industry
Once purified and certified in accordance with the requirements of each application, biogenic CO₂ can be used for beverage carbonation, preservation using modified atmospheres and certain refrigeration processes.
Agriculture and greenhouses
The controlled supply of CO₂ in greenhouses promotes photosynthesis and supports crop growth. Biogenic CO₂ can meet this demand using a source of carbon derived from the recovery of organic resources.
Renewable fuels
Biogenic CO₂ can be combined with renewable hydrogen to produce synthetic fuels such as e-methanol, e-methane and other renewable hydrocarbons.
Biorig: molecules with industrial and regional value
Water-free production
The dry separation system selected by Biorig eliminates water consumption during the CO₂ capture stage, reducing the process's resource requirements.
High-purity CO₂
The separation carried out during upgrading enables Biorig's bioCO₂ to achieve a purity of 99.9%, making it suitable for food and pharmaceutical applications.
Energy-efficient capture
Biorig's CO₂ capture processes are designed to be energy efficient, using technologies that minimise energy consumption during the production phase.
Integration into the circular economy
Through a single process, Biorig's facilities transform organic waste into energy and agricultural resources.
Contributing to rural development
The production and recovery of biogenic CO₂ bring new industrial activities to biomethane plants and support the creation of local value chains.
